HI Jim! Chows look very cute especially as a puppy and therefore, lots of people choose this breed as their family pet because it is so fluffy and cute. Unfortunately, they are anything but nice. The truth of the matter is that we cannot trust any chow that comes in the clinic. We must assume that they are going to harm us. And, most do try to bite us. There is an occassional "nice" chow, but this is very rare and we still have to be on guard with the "nice" ones. Most grooming shops refuse to work on chows. All chows have to be groomed. Most chows will not allow their owners to groom them. Most chows have serious medical problems such hip dysplasia, ear infections, allergy and skin problems, eyelid problems that require surgery, and more. In good conscience, I cannot recommend a chow as a good family pet. Dr. Judy Lewis
