Is it possible for dogs to have ADD? I am concerned about our silky terrier that has similar behavior as people do with ADD. If so, is medication available?

ADD has not been adequately studied in the veterinary world, but it has been noted that certain dogs do respond favorably to the same behavioral medications that are used in humans. At this point in time, there is not a test or viable means to diagnose ADD in dogs. Talking it over with your veterinarian or discussing it in more detail with me would be advisable. Dr. Lewis

Judy,
I have a dog that is out of control as well. He doesn't know how to relax. Could we just try Ritalin on him and see if it helps. Is that legal? How can I set up an appointment with you if I want to talk further about this?Mary |

Hi Mary, sorry it has taken so long to reply! I would not consider ritalin yet and only as a last ditch effort. First, behavioral modification would be the best approach to begin with. Most dog trainers and behaviorlists are capable of this task. Please contact me for more info.
